Building a franchise of galleries in the 1980s, he fostered relationships with wealthy collectors such as Eli Broad and Si Newhouse, Jr.. Gagosian brokered the second-largest art sale ever, that of Willem de Kooning's Woman III to David Geffen for $137M (2006).

Gagosian and partners were investigated by the FBI for tax evasion in their use of a shell corporation in a 1990 deal, demanding fines of $26.5M. Also investigated for the sale of paintings to ImClone CEO Sam Waksal.
