A newspaperman and Republican activist who was Lieutenant Governor, McCuish became Governor upon the resignation of Fred Hall, whom he then promptly appointed to the State Supreme Court. His sole act as governor prevented his successor George Docking, a Democrat, from exercising the appointment. McCuish's term of 11 days was the shortest in state history. Afterwards he resumed his career as publisher.
