Mayor of Cologne during the Weimar Republic, pushed out of office by the Nazis only to be reinstated by the Allies after conclusion of the War and then almost immediately deposed by the British for his criticism of policy. Elected first Chancellor of West Germany on 15 September 1949 and held the office fourteen years.
