Monte Clark AKA Monte Dale Clark Born: 24-Jan-1937 Birthplace: Fillmore, CA Died: 16-Sep-2009 Location of death: Detroit, MI [1] Cause of death: unspecified
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Football Nationality: United States Executive summary: Detroit Lions Head Coach, 1978-84 After a decade as a professional player primarily as an offensive tackle, Monte Clark was hired in 1970 by Don Shula as an offensive line coach for the Miami Dolphins, where he later served as offensive coordinator. Those years were quite successful, the Dolphins winning the Super Bowl in 1973 and 1974. The San Francisco 49ers hired him in 1976 as head coach, but he also served the role of director of player personnel. The team was then sold, and the new owner, Eddie DeBartolo, Jr., did not want him to perform this latter role, so Clark was fired. Clark spent one year idle and in 1978 was hired by the Detroit Lions as head coach. He brought them to playoffs in 1982, and in 1983 the Lions won the NFC Central Division title, but otherwise, his tenure in Detroit was disappointing. He was let go in 1984, and did not work in the NFL again until 1990 when he became director of personnel for the Dolphins. After retirement from coaching, he was an broadcast analyst and eventually, was hired as a consultant for the Lions. Clark died in 2009 from a bone marrow malignancy.
