As a political refugee in the United States, he married his "half Portuguese, half Italian" girlfriend who converted to Islam and garbed herself appropriately. The couple had a three-year-old daughter, Zahara. A 2009 domestic violence arrest prevented him from obtaining citizenship.
In 2013, Tamerlan and his brother Dzhokhar performed the dirty work behind the Boston Marathon pressure-cooker bombings, which killed three people and injured over 100. Not known is how much outside help the pair received. An uncle, Alvi, stated that Tamerlan had telephoned him asking for forgiveness, but did not elaborate on the cause. Several days after the bombing, Tamerlan was killed in an extended firefight with police. Brother Dzhokhar was later captured hiding on a boat in a Watertown backyard.
