Born 1913 in Twin Falls, Idaho, Felt joined the FBI in 1942, serving in various positions and cities before being put in charge of the Inspection Division in 1964. He became an assistant director to J. Edgar Hoover in 1965, succeeding to the number-two position of Associate Director, upon Hoover's death. He retired from the FBI in 1973. In information made public on 31 May 2005, Vanity Fair magazine claimed that W. Mark Felt revealed that he was the infamous Deep Throat, a primary source for Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein's stories published in the Washington Post. Deep Throat would only confirm or deny details that the two reporters had already uncovered on their own -- he did not provide them with original information. The admission of all this appeared in the July 2005 issue of the magazine, in a story written by John D. O'Connor. Woodward later that day confirmed Deep Throat's identity, though the leaks in question had already been suspected by the Nixon White House, recorded for posterity on a tape between the president and H. R. Haldeman. As to motive, some have speculated that Felt's being passed over for directorship of the FBI as at least partly responsible for his choice, while others ascribe mere altruism. Those who feel that Felt had recourse to the Justice Department conveniently forget that Attorney General John Mitchell was part of the Watergate conspiracy.
