Executive summary: Tony Soprano's bratty daughter Jamie-Lynn Sigler began performing on stage at the age of seven, and attended dance school with little Natalie Portman. She had dozens of professional stage credits, including Grease and The Wizard of Oz, before being hired to portray the troubled Mafia princess Meadow Soprano in The Sopranos, with James Gandolfini and Edie Falco playing her parents.
In 2001, she released an album of her singing, called Here to
Heaven. In publicity quotes, Sigler said she was inspired by the career and music of pre-breakdown Mariah Carey. In TV commercials for Levi's jeans, Sigler provides the voice for a singing belly button, and in 2002, she made her Broadway debut as Belle in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.
In 2003 she married her long-time manager, A. J. DiScala, took his last name and making her Italian-American if only by marriage. Her father is Cuban, her mother Greek-American, with bits of Romanian and Sephardic Jew mixed in. Sigler speaks fluent Greek and Spanish. In announcing their nuptials, she said of her husband, "I began trusting this man with my career, and now I trust him with my life." They separated two years later.
In 2004, she played Hollywood madame Heidi Fleiss for a tacky TV movie, Call Me. "Nudity is not something I'm comfortable with," she explained, "so I had a body double for shots where you see me naked." The New York Daily News described the telefilm as "one of the least sexy films ever."
In 2004, Sigler signed a promotional deal with offshore gaming company Casino Fortune, then backed out days later when it was reported that a company executive had made disparaging remarks about her weight. Sigler has suffered "weight and body image problems", and suffered from "exercise bulimia" during The Sopranos' first season, dropping from 125 pounds to a wafer-thin 90.
