Hugh Cudlipp was hired as a reporter at London's Sunday Chronicle when he was just 19. He jumped to the Daily Mirror as Features Editor three years later, and spent most of his career at the Mirror, rising to Publisher and beyond. He reinvented the Daily Mirror as among the most successful and influential newspapers of its era, an American-style rabble-rousing, populist tabloid that was the world's most widely-read newspaper, with circulation peaking at more than five million daily in 1967. Several years after the 1963 merger of the Mirror Group with three other publishers to form International Publishing Corporation, he became Chairman of IPC, overseeing some 200 newspapers and magazines.
