Bolshoi ballet dancer, who was forbidden for years from traveling abroad for fear of defection. Ultimately when he was permitted overseas in 1979, he did indeed defect, with American authorities holding his wife, ballerina Lyudmilla Vlasova, for three days at the airport, not believing he would actually want to return. After defection he joined the American Ballet Theater, until a disagreement with fellow Bolshoi defector Mikhail Baryshnikov in 1982 led to Godunov's firing. After this point his heart was no longer in his dancing. Godunov died from complications of his alcoholism and hepatitis in 1995.
