Saint Lucian economist Sir Arthur Lewis won the Nobel Prize in Economics in 1979, sharing the honor with an American, and Theodore W. Schultz. Lewis's best-known work involved devising new models for trade between industrial and less developed nations. He served as an economic advisor to the United Nations, and at various times helped guide the economic policies of Barbados, Ghana, Jamaica, Nigeria, and Trinidad and Tobago. In the early 1950s he was Managing Director of the United Nations Special Fund, and in the 1970s he established the Caribbean Development Bank, and served as its first President.
