Crossley fled the scene, but it was determined later that Davis had ventured into the middle of the street and brandished a bottle at the oncoming automobile. Davis threw the bottle at Crossley's windshield. Crossley claims to have swerved but still struck Davis, killing the athlete. Victor Davis' organs were donated and a memorial fund established in his name to support young amateur swimmers. A biopic, Victor, was broadcast in 2008.
