Emigrated to New York, 1948. He gained a reputation early on as an exceptional hat designer. Later he was known as a "copier" of Coco Chanel (at a time when that company was out of favor), though he insists it is usually Chanel copying him. Introduced by Betsy Bloomingdale to Nancy Reagan in 1967, by the 1980s Adolfo's business was given huge boosts as the now-First Lady was seen wearing many of his dresses.

Adolfo retired from designing in 1993, switching emphasis to licensing.
