Long-time New York political powerhouse and state Senate majority leader, found guilty 6-May-2010 on two violations of the Federal Honest Services Law for using his elected office to illegally benefit well-connected businessmen. The convictions were later overturned, based on Bruno's argument that the law was too vaguely written. He was then re-charged and tried under under a different statute, but found not guilty. Under a state law which provides that state employees may have their attorneys' billings reimbursed if acquitted of crimes related to their duties, Bruno was then compensated $2.4-million in legal fees.
