Executive summary: Founder of Searle Pharmaceuticals Military service: US Army, 15th New York Cavalry (Civil War) Gideon Daniel Searle was a Civil War veteran, small-town druggist, and a friend of Frank Hereth, who had been chief chemist for Eli Lilly. Hereth became Searle's business partner in Searle and Hereth Co. in 1888, a business that evolved into Searle Pharmaceuticals. Legally incorporated in Chicago twenty years later, the company's early business model involved manufacturing and packaging remedies for syphilis and amoebic dysentery, among other medicines, and selling these drugs to physicians, who in turn sold these drugs to their patients instead of sending patients to drug stores. Searle ran the company until his death in 1917, at which time his son, Claude Howard Searle, became President of Searle. Under this next generation of family ownership the company developed its most successful early product, the fiber supplement Metamucil. Searle is now a subsidiary of Monsanto. Father: Herman L.
