Ellen DeGeneres AKA Ellen Lee DeGeneres Born: 26-Jan-1958 Birthplace: Metairie, LA
Gender: Female Religion: Christian Science Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Lesbian Occupation: Comic Party Affiliation: Democratic Nationality: United States Executive summary: Ellen Ellen DeGeneres started as a stand-up comedian, debuting her act on amateur night at a New Orleans coffee shop in 1981. Only a year later, she won Showtime's Funniest Person in America competition. Her style was always generally good-natured and non-political, and she was able to make a living off comedy clubs and talk show appearances. In 1988, she had a supporting role in the sit-com Duet, and later she turned down an offer to be one of the friends on Friends. She got her own show, an uninspired Seinfeld rip-off called These Friends of Mine, which was eventually re-named Ellen and blossomed into a watchable if not particularly memorable comedy.
On 30 April 1997, Degeneres came out of the closet on Ellen; the episode received huge ratings and media attention, put DeGeneres on the cover of Time magazine, and got her condemned as "Ellen Degenerate" by Rev. Jerry Falwell. It also made Ellen the first network series with an out-gay lead character.
Ellen was cancelled the following season, and DeGeneres popped up again a few years later with a quickly cancelled sit-com, The Ellen Show. Her talk show The Ellen DeGeneres Show, won four Emmys in its first year, including Best Host for its star, and DeGeneres's habit of nagging viewers about pet adoption and compassion for animals won her a Founder's Award from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA).
Ellen's mother is about as supportive a mom as any gay person could hope for. She writes an advice column for Planet Out, and serves as spokeswoman for the Human Rights Commission's Coming Out Project.
