Sherwin, and another Republican associate, fund-raiser William C. Loughran, were convicted of bribery and extortion. Two more indictments followed in April the following year for conspiracy and bribery, and still more in May, including a former New Jersey State Treasurer. Some of these charges touched on the operation of his political campaigns. Thus Cahill lost the 1973 Republican nomination and retired from politics.
