In a nation infamous for its institutionalized government corruption, his campaign motto was "Ni corrupto, ni ladrón" ("Neither corrupt nor a thief"). On his TV show Moralejas (Morals) he played a cowboy who became Guatemala's President, but in real life his only political experience was an unsuccessful campaign for mayor of Mixco, a city with a population of about 450,000. An evangelical Christian, he opposes abortion, legalized drugs, and same-sex marriage. He will take office on 14 January 2016.
