Executive summary: Rushmore Jason Schwartzman's film debut was auspicious, as an overachiever in Wes Anderson's 1998 prep school comedy Rushmore, opposite Bill Murray. He has reprised the character a handful of times, to varying degrees of success.
Schwartzman's father was Jack Schwartzman, producer of the 1983 007 flick Never Say Never Again and Peter Sellers's Being There. His mother is actress Talia Shire, best remembered as Rocky's "Yo, Adrian." His step-brother is John Schwartzman, cinematographer of Armageddon, Pearl Harbor, and Seabiscuit. Francis Ford Coppola is Schwartzman's uncle, and Nicolas Cage is his cousin. Schwartzman says he auditioned for Rushmore without revealing his family lineage.
Schwartzman has played drums since he was 10, and before Rushmore, he was the drummer for the rock band Phantom Planet. He is credited as co-writer of their best known song, "California", which became the theme song for Fox's teen angst soap opera The O.C.
