An always entertaining right-wing Congressman, he has proposed that every student in US public schools should learn "the tenets of the Christian faith", said that racial profiling should be a "common sense" strategy for police and security officers, defended flying the Confederate flag above present-day Southern state capitols, praised Senator Joseph McCarthy as "a great American hero", and said that torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib amounted to little more than "hazing". Days after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005 he voted against emergency aid for its victims even as parts of New Orleans were underwater, and he was the only member of Congress to vote against a 2009 resolution acknowledging the work of long-dead slave laborers who helped build the US Capitol.
