After a stint in the late 1950s composing music for The Donna Reed Show, Phillips became an A&R man for Colpix records, producing easy listening acts The Marcels and James Darren. He had his first major success with the Hollyridge Strings, responsible for a series of blasphemous orchestral arrangements of contemporary rock bands -- The Beatles, Elvis Presley, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Simon and Garfunkel, and so on. Phillips is best known for his scores for 70s television shows The Six Million Dollar Man, Knight Rider, Quincy, Battlestar Galactica, and Buck Rogers in the 25th Century.
