Richard Samuel Reynolds dropped out of two law schools, then served for several years a Vice President at R. J. Reynolds, a tobacco firm owned by his uncle, Richard Joshua Reynolds. There he designed an improved waterproof tin for the company's Prince Albert brand pipe tobacco, then left his uncle's employ to begin a soap and cleaning supply company, which failed after several years. After his uncle's death but with financial backing from his uncle's company, Reynolds then launched the United States Tin Foil Company, originally as a supplier of foil wraps for cigarette packaging. U.S. Tin Foil Co was reorganized as Reynolds Metals in 1928, pioneered the development of aluminum siding in the 1940s, and introduced its best-known product, Reynolds Wrap aluminum foil, in 1947.
