Jean-Benoît Dunckel, a mathematician studying in Versaille, first began a working partnership with Nicolas Godin in the indie band Orange. When Orange failed to make headway, the two continued working together as Air, specializing in retro-flavored electronic music. Active since 1995, Air has continued to define its own particular niche in the electronica genre. In 2000, it solidified its reputation considerably with a score for Sofia Coppola's critically-acclaimed film The Virgin Suicides.
