Willie adopted the name Boxcar in 1976, after he purportedly saw a hobo resembling Willie Nelson at a train crossing. He joined the Grand Ole Opry in 1981, purchased a theater in Branson in 1987, and extended his operations to include a Boxcar Willie Railroad and Airplane Museum in 1990.

Boxcar is a first cousin of Tommy Lee Jones.
