First Socialist elected to US Congress. Indicted in 1918 under the wartime Espionage Act for his opposition to the First World War, and was convicted by Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis and sentenced to 20 years in prison. The verdict was overturned in 1921 by the Supreme Court.
