Executive summary: American country rock singer, The Story

Brandi Carlile is a country rock singer from Washington whose single The Story (from the album of the same name) peaked at 75th on the U.S. Hot 100 charts in early 2008.

Born into a rural family, her first endeavor in music was performing a rendition of the song Tennessee Flat Top Box with her mother at the age of eight. She learned to play the guitar at the age of fifteen and began to write songs around then, performing with an Elvis impersonator at the age of sixteen. She formed The Brandi Carlile Band in Seattle a couple of years later, getting signed to a record contract in 2004 after being discovered by Dave Matthews while performing at a concert in 2003.

Carlile has released seven albums, five of them independent; her first commercial album, Brandi Carlile, was released to critical success and limited commercial success. Her aforementioned album The Story was released to somewhat larger commercial success. The Story's song of the same name was featured heavily in Toyota commercials during the 2008 Summer Olympics, leading to increased exposure to her music; The Story peaked at #5 on the iTunes Music Store's most purchased list.

In the past, Carlile served as an occasional supporting act at Tori Amos concerts.
