Once a practicing lawyer and prolific pulp magazine author, Gardner penned over 80 Perry Mason novels, the character inspiring the wildly popular prime-time television series Perry Mason (1957-66). A radio show also based on the character became the soap opera The Edge of Night (1956-84). Gardner organized The Court of Last Resort, to assist imprisoned individuals who had a probabability of wrongful conviction, and had not the means to defend themselves.
