On 15 May 1972, shot and crippled Alabama Governor George Wallace during a campaign rally for his run for President, Laurel, Maryland. Sentenced to 53 years in prison, he was paroled in 2007, 18 years early due to good behavior.

Wallace, who spent the rest of his life in a wheelchair, died in 1998.
