Suffering a midlife crisis in the late-1960s, Clokey left his family to engage with the blossoming counterculture. He entered therapy with Timothy Leary, who prescribed him LSD, and later gravitated toward Zen Buddhism. Gumby's companions Prickle and Goo were inspired by the writing of Alan Watts.
