Current President of Nigeria. Founded the African Leadership Forum in 1988; lost bid to become UN Secretary General in 1991. In 1995, he was tried and convicted for plotting a coup against Nigeria's military leader, Sani Abacha. He was originally given a life sentence in prison, but he ended up spending only three years behind bars, thanks to pressure from influential outsiders like Jimmy Carter, Nelson Mandela, and Helmut Schmidt.
