Active in an alarming number of African countries between the 1960s and 1990s. He was implicated in a plot to assassinate French Prime Minister Pierre Mendès-France, but was acquitted. He fought for Katangan independence in the 1960s. Denard overthrew the Comoros government four times, in one instance personally machine-gunning Ali Soilih while Soilih was engaged in naked debauchery. This overthrow was paid by Ahmed Abdallah. In a subsequent coup, Denard had Abdallah himself killed. While generally an independent mercenary, he frequently operated under the auspices of the French Government. Married twice plus an additional five polygamous wives, permitted under Islamic law.
