Executive summary: Weezer frontman Born in a New York City hospital, grew up on a hindu ashram called Yogaville, in northeastern Connecticut. When that commune moved to Virginia, the Cuomo family did not, and Rivers graduated from a high school in Storrs. While still in Connecticut he helped form a prog-metal band called Avant Garde, which relocated to California and broke up in 1990. Two years later in Los Angeles, the band Weezer was formed with Patrick Wilson (drummer), Matt Sharp (bassist), and Jason Cropper (guitarist). By 1994 the band has hit it big, but seemingly dropped out of sight for five years after the release of their album Pinkerton in 1996 -- notably, Cuomo underwent painful surgery in 1995 to lengthen one of his mismatched legs. A "comeback" album, Weezer ("The Green Album") in 2001 proves popular, as do subsequent albums.
