George Darwin AKA George Howard Darwin Born: 9-Jul-1845 Birthplace: Downe, Kent, England Died: 7-Dec-1912 Location of death: Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, England Cause of death: Complications of Surgery
Gender: Male Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Astronomer, Mathematician Nationality: England Executive summary: Evolution of the Sun-Earth-Moon system Son of Charles Darwin and descendant of Josiah Wedgwood, George Darwin said he was "born in the scientific purple". He studied the tides, the origins of the solar system, marriages between first cousins, and the "three-body problem" (a physics conundrum so difficult many believe it cannot be solved), and was knighted for his services to astronomy and mathematics. He strongly supported the theory that the moon had broken away from the Earth during our planet's molten era, a notion generally scoffed at today, but widely accepted in Darwin's time. He was the first scientist to apply mathematics to the study of the evolution of the Sun-Earth-Moon system. He also worked as a barrister and he is the namesake of Crater Darwin on Mars.
