In 1914 Sweden's only automaker went out of business, and ten years later ball-bearing salesman Assar Gabrielsson met with engineer Gustav Larson to discuss the possibility of establishing a new carmaking business in their country. The company was trademarked as Volvo, a Latin term meaning literally "I roll". After several years of design, budget pleadings, and tests with several experimental models, Volvo's first production vehicle rolled off the assembly line in 1927. According to company folklore, Volvo's famous obsession with safety began with Gabrielsson himself, who made it a primary concern after his wife's death in an auto accident.
