Richard Land

AKA Richard D. Land

Born: 1947
Birthplace: Houston, TX

Gender: Male
Religion: Baptist
Race or Ethnicity: White
Sexual orientation: Straight
Occupation: Religion, Activist, Radio Personality

Nationality: United States
Executive summary: Southern Baptist Convention

Former President of the Southern Baptist Convention's Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, and host of the church's nationally-syndicated Richard Land Live! radio broadcast. He lost both positions following an on-air rant in the aftermath of George Zimmerman's killing of an unarmed but hoodie-wearing black teen, Trayvon Martin, in 2012.

On the broadcast, Land predicted a violent response, and said "when there is violence it's going to be Jesse Jackson's fault, it's going to be Al Sharpton's fault, it's going to be Louis Farrakhan's fault, and to a certain degree it is going to be President Obama's fault." Land's diatribe was substantially longer than that -- basically the length of a newspaper column -- and indeed, it was soon noticed that Land's remarks from beginning to end were an uncredited and nearly verbatim reading of a column by Jeffrey T. Kuhner that had appeared two days earlier in the right-wing Washington Times.

After leaving the church and the radio program, Land became President of the Southern Evangelical Seminary and Bible College.
