Executive summary: Killed 49 at an Orlando gay nightclub

Committed the largest terrorist act in the United States since the 9/11 attacks, when he opened fire at the Pulse gay nightclub in Orlando, killing 49 and injuring an additional 53[3]. He was killed in the ensuing shootout with police. In a telephone call to 911 dispatchers, Mateen cited solidarity with the radical ISIS group, though it is unlikely he had any contact with that organization. Earlier, Mateen twice attracted attentions of the FBI, once for making inflammatory comments, and once for a tangential connection to a suicide bomber who died overseas. Briefly, he appeared on the FBI terrorist watchlist.

[2] Lawrence Mower, "Orlando Shooter Omar Mateen Was Gay, Former Classmate Says", The Palm Beach Post, 13 June 2016: "The classmate said that he, Mateen and other classmates would hang out, sometimes going to gay nightclubs, after classes at the Indian River Community College police academy. He said Mateen asked him out romantically."

[3] Often cited by media as the largest mass shooting in US history, but this is far from true. The 1890 Massacre at Wounded Knee saw 300 Native Americans outright murdered by the 7th Cavalry under a flag of truce; several other 19th Century massacres also have higher numbers, including the 1864 San Creek Massacre (160 murdered, largely women and children). The early 20th Century brought large scale labor killings by private armies.
