Attended for three years but did not graduate from West Point, though some sources incorrectly claim that he did. Gilchrist's gubernatorial campaign was highlighted by giving out thousands of postcards of monkeys, apparently enough to get him elected 20th Governor of Florida. Gilchrist never married, and after his death his considerable estate was largely given to charity, with some reserved to buy Halloween candy for children in Punta Gorda.
