Born in 1944 he grew up in Mount Vernon, New York, and Ann Arbor, Michigan. Stasheff holds a Ph.D. in theater, a subject he taught at Montclair State University, New Jersey before leaving to write fantasy and science fiction. Stasheff describes himself as having "difficulty distinguishing fantasy from reality" and a tendency to "pre-script" his life. He currently resides in Portales, New Mexico.
His father was Edward Stasheff, a former University of Michigan Professor (1952-1977) who was previously involved in the early days of CBS and ABC television and the establishment of Israeli television service.
