Inventor and entrepreneur Morris E. Leeds devised numerous scientific instruments in the late 1800s and early 1900s. In 1899 he founded the company that became Leeds & Northrup, generally considered the first American manufacturer of research and testing equipment of quality comparable to European competitors, and a dominant force in scientific equipment through most of the twentieth century. As President of Leeds & Northrup, Leeds was an innovator in progressive business tactics. He instituted an employee stock-purchase program, offered tuition subsidies for continuing education, introduced life insurance and unemployment insurance as employment benefits, and established one of the first personnel departments to deal with workers' concerns.
