Gender: Female Race or Ethnicity: White Sexual orientation: Straight Occupation: Business, Journalist Nationality: United States Executive summary: Founder of Newsday Alicia Patterson was the founder of Newsday. The daughter of New York Daily News publisher Joseph Medill Patterson and niece of Washington Times-Herald publisher Cissy Patterson, she attended the best private schools, and was expelled from two. She was fired as a writer at her father's Daily News in her early 20s, after getting the basic facts of a divorce wrong in a published report. Calling herself Agnes Homberg, she spent several months working ordinary jobs as a cashier and salesgirl, then wrote about it in her father's magazine Liberty.
Her third husband, Harry Frank Guggenheim, was heir to the Guggenheim fortune, and he bought her a printing press from the defunct Nassau County Journal and leased office space at a closed auto dealership on Long Island, where she published the first edition of Long Island's Newsday on 3 September 1940. Under her leadership Newsday became known as a dogged, aggressive newspaper that challenged New York City's dailies in circulation, advertising, and prestige. She was the subject of Joan Miró's mural Alicia.
