As President of Indiana University, in 2000 Myles Brand fired basketball coach Bobby Knight, citing a "pattern of unacceptable behavior." Knight had coached the Hoosiers since 1971, and as winning a Coach as he was, earlier antics had included throwing a chair across the court during a game, and the assault one of his players in 1997. He had denied the latter event, until a film of it surfaced. In May of 2000, Brand placed Knight on a "zero tolerance" policy, and by September he had committed an act necessitating his removal. Fury erupted among Hoosier fans as news of the firing spread.

In 2003, Brand was selected as President of the National Collegiate Athletic Association, the first university president to assume that office. As such, he tried to bring back the emphasis of academics into college sporting. Brand felt that the money involved in sports often blinded administrators at some schools as to the real purposes of their institutions. Eligibility standards for participation in sports were increased. Because of his non-sports background, Brand made an extra effort to listen to and address the concerns of coaches and player organizations. In January 2009, Brand was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He died in September of that year.
