Harvard-educated attorney at Morgan Lewis & Bockius in the 1980s, when then-Commissioner Peter Ueberroth turned to that firm as Major League Baseball's outside counsel. Provided legal assistance during Baseball's 1990 Spring Training lockout of players, and was lead counsel for team owners during the 1994 players' strike leading to cancellation of that year's World Series. In 1998 he was hired as MLB's Executive Vice President of Labor Relations and Human Resources, where he led owners' negotiations with the Player's Union in 2002, 2006, and 2011. Seen as Commissioner Bud Selig's right-hand man in running the business, he was promoted to Chief Operations Officer in 2013, and succeeded Selig as Commissioner of Baseball in 2014.
