In English it is the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas is an acronym for Harakat al-Muqawama al-Islamia, founded 1987 from portions of the Muslim Brotherhood. After the assassination of Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, perhaps 40% of Palestinians support Hamas.
