LIBRARY

Founded 1830 as the library of the Bangor Mechanic Association. A bequest by Samuel F. Hersey in 1883 established the library as a public institution. In 1911, the entire library of 70,000 books was destroyed in the fire that burnt Bangor's downtown. A new library was opened on 20 December 1913.
