US GOVERNMENT OFFICE

Position created to enhance the US State Department's role in the formulation of international security policy, to supervise security assistance and foreign military sales programs, and to direct the issuance of arms export licenses. Originally designated by the US Secretary of State, the position has been filled by Presidential appointment since 1986.
