This position was created in 1947 as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of State in order to take up some of the functions of the wartime Office of Strategic Services, and was elevated to Director for Intelligence and Research in 1957. Originally designated by the Secretary of State, in 1986 the position was renamed Assistant Secretary has since been filled by Presidential appointment. See also US State Department.
