Population: 506,926 (2002 census) Was known as "Uskub", or "Üsküp", from the fall of the city in 1389 until the expulsion of the Turks by Albanian rebels in August 1912 during the 1912-13 Balkan Wars. The Treaty of London (30 May 1913) ratified the Turks' permanent removal from much of their European lands.
