LOCATION

Site of Baikonur Cosmodrome, which launched both Sputnik and Yuri Gagarin into space. The spaceport is named for Baikonur, a small village two hundred miles away. Founded 1955, it also tested the first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). After the fall of the Soviet Union, the Russian government continued to lease the site until 2007, as it developed another launch site on Russian soil in east Asia.
