The two samurai warriors Washizu and Miki defeat the traitorous warlord Inui, and while returning from battle they come across a prognosticating spirit that foretells Washizu shall succeed his lord, and subsequently Miki's son shall succeed Washizu. With the encouragement of his ambitious and cynical wife, Washizu murders his master, but steps must be taken to ensure that the second half of the prophecy not unfold. Macbeth relocated from Scotland to Medieval Japan; critic Harold Bloom deems it "the most successful film version of Macbeth."
