Tom Hanks plays Andrew Beckett, an attorney fired by his law firm for having contracted AIDS. Beckett, a non-stereotypical gay man, hires a homophobic attorney to litigate his case of wrongful dismissal. Outstanding performances by both Hanks and Denzel Washington; a daring film to produce in 1993 to what was then an unsympathetic public. Won Oscars for Best Actor and Best Original Song; received additional nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Makeup, and a second nomination for Best Original Song.
