Four European expatriates are hired to deliver a cargo of nitroglycerine to an oil well fire in a difficult-to-reach South American region, without the usual protections such a cargo requires; the men are down on their luck and were selected on one criterion only -- none would be missed should catastrophe befall. Won the Grand Prix at Cannes and the Goldener Bär at the Berlin International Film Festival. Arnaud's novel was later remade by William Friedkin as Sorcerer (1977).
